AlgaToro is SeaStock’s Asparagopsis-derived product designed to reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock. The newly signed strategic partnership agreement will support its introduction and market development in Japan.
Under the agreement, Marubeni Innovexis will combine its customer networks, chemical trading expertise and commercial capabilities with SeaStock’s marine science and Asparagopsis product development expertise to bring AlgaToro to the Japanese market.
The two companies will work with customers in Japan to progress approval of AlgaToro by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) as a feed additive, as well as assess potential opportunities under Japan’s J-Credit Scheme relating to methane reduction in the livestock sector. They will also work to develop sales channels for the product.
AlgaToro is a 100 percent natural, non-synthetic bromoform concentrate produced from Asparagopsis taxiformis, a red algae species. SeaStock says the product is designed to reduce methane emissions from enteric fermentation in ruminant livestock by up to 90 percent, based on its own analysis.
Research into Asparagopsis-based methane reduction has been carried out for more than a decade by CSIRO, James Cook University and Meat & Livestock Australia. SeaStock is also a FutureFeed licensee.
“Our partnership with Marubeni Innovexis allows us to bring our onshore-cultivated natural AlgaToro™ product to the Japanese market, meeting the urgent need for sustainable and effective solutions in the livestock sector,” said Tom Puddy, chief executive and managing director of SeaStock, in press release.
The agreement comes amid growing interest in Japan in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the livestock sector. In February 2026, MAFF added a methodology to the J-Credit Scheme covering methane reductions from cattle through the use of feed containing approved methane-reducing additives.
Japan had approximately 1.286 million dairy cattle and 2.473 million beef cattle as of 1 February 2026, according to MAFF’s 2026 Livestock Statistics.
SeaStock and Marubeni Innovexis are also in discussions with Nippon Beet Sugar Manufacturing Co., Ltd. over potential three-party cooperation to support the application and approval process for AlgaToro in Japan, drawing on Nippon Beat Sugar’s expertise and networks in the domestic livestock and feed sectors.
The partners will also discuss potential future expansion into Southeast Asia and other international markets.
