Discovering Shimonoseki: Sights and Culinary Delights
This travel program takes place in Shimonoseki, Yamaguchi Prefecture, at the westernmost tip of Honshu, where our reporter, Janni Olsson from Sweden explores the city, experiencing its unique attractions firsthand.
Through the rich natural surroundings of Shimonoseki, embraced by sea and mountains, its culture shaped by centuries of history, and its world-class cuisine, the program showcases the diverse appeal of the “City of the Strait,” to audiences around the world.
The journey begins at Tsunoshima Bridge, stretching across a cobalt-blue sea. From scenic drives and crystal-clear beaches to singing sands and the over 800 year old Kawatana Onsen hot spring, the program highlights Shimonoseki’s magnificent natural beauty and its relaxed pace of life, as well as the region’s local culture through the origin story of its famous kawara soba noodles and the stories of people who have relocated to the area.
In the Chofu district, the journey continues through the streets of the former castle town, visiting historic sites such as Kozanji Temple and Chofu Garden to experience the adventures of Japan’s past. At the long-established Shunpanro, the reporter samples fugu, or pufferfish, one of Japan’s iconic culinary traditions. Through visits to the specialty market and interviews with skilled chefs, the program explores food safety measures, culinary craftsmanship, and why Shimonoseki is known as the home of fugu.
Modern-day Shimonoseki blends historic port-city heritage with new tourist attractions, including Hinoyama Park overlooking the Kanmon Strait, Karato Retro Street, the waterfront, and aquarium. The trip concludes at a sake brewery with more than a century of history, where the reporter takes part in a hands-on sake blending experience. Creating a one-of-a-kind bottle is the kind of experiential tourism which is attracting growing attention in recent years.
Beyond spectacular scenery and delicious food, this program delves into the history, everyday lives, culture, and stories that make Shimonoseki unique, and offers visitors a journey designed to leave them wanting to visit again.
