Walking Around Hiroshima’s Atomic Bomb Dome 🇯🇵🕊️
What is this historic structure, and why is it still standing?
The Atomic Bomb Dome, also known as the Hiroshima Peace Memorial (Genbaku Dome), was originally built in 1915 as the Hiroshima Prefectural Industrial Promotion Hall.
On 6 August 1945, during World War II, the United States dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima. The bomb exploded approximately 600 metres above the city, devastating Hiroshima and killing tens of thousands of people.
Remarkably, this building—located only about 150 metres from the hypocentre—was one of the few structures in the area whose remains survived. Although most of the building was destroyed, its distinctive dome and skeletal structure remained standing.
The ruins were later preserved as a memorial and today stand as a powerful symbol of remembrance, peace and the hope that such destruction will never happen again. 🕊️🌍
