2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, Japan time: If Tropical Storm Saudel‘s current forecast track holds, Okinawa could see its fifth tropical cyclone of the season, which is only about 3 months old. The latest Joint Typhoon Warning Center forecast track keeps Saudel well northeast of Guam, but on track to pass just northeast of Okinawa at mid-day Wednesday next.
Guam and the Marianas Islands could be spared Saudel‘s worst, based on the current forecast. They’ve already had enough this spring and summer, given the two super typhoons that ramrodded through that area. As for Okinawa, they’ve been coming from the southeast in assembly line-like fashion.
At 9 a.m. Japan time Thursday, Saudel was about 1,585 miles southeast of Kadena Air Base, Okinawa, motoring northwest at 13 mph and had strengthened to 50-mph sustained winds and 65-mph gusts.
