Chabad at Rice kicks off 11th year with popular Sushi Social

As a new academic year is about to begin, Chabad at Rice is rolling out the welcome mat – and the sushi – for Jewish college students from across Houston.

On Thursday, Aug. 27, at 7:30 p.m., more than 100 students are expected to gather for Chabad at Rice’s popular Sushi Social. The program brings together new and returning Jewish students for an evening of food, friendship and community.

The event will kick off Chabad at Rice’s 21st semester. It’s also a milestone year as Rabbi Shmuli and Nechama Slonim mark a decade of serving Jewish students throughout the Houston area.

“The beginning of a new school year always brings an incredible sense of energy and possibility,” said Rabbi Slonim. “For us, the Sushi Social is about making sure that from the very beginning, every Jewish student knows there is a place for them here – a place to meet people, make friends and feel at home.”

The Sushi Social has become one of Chabad at Rice’s most anticipated events of the year. What began in 2017 as a gathering of about 20 students has grown into a major semester kickoff, drawing students from Rice and other Houston-area colleges and universities.

This year’s gathering comes as Chabad begins its 10th year on campus and looks ahead to another full calendar of Shabbat dinners, holiday celebrations, Jewish learning, social events and opportunities for students to connect with one another.

“There is something especially exciting about welcoming students back this year as we begin our second decade,” said Nechama. “Some students will walk into the Sushi Social already knowing dozens of people, while others may not know a single person. We want both to feel equally welcome.

“If you’re a Jewish college student anywhere in Houston, this invitation is for you.”

The event will take place in Chabad’s spacious air-conditioned outdoor tent, which has allowed the organization to accommodate its growing student community while plans move forward for its new student center.
