Japan has emerged as a dominant force in a new ranking of the world’s best cities for remote workers, with Tokyo, Osaka, and Nagoya all securing spots in the top ten. The study, conducted by independent VPN review platform vpn.jpn.com, evaluated 104 major cities worldwide based on factors crucial to digital nomads, including work-friendly infrastructure, cost, leisure options, and quality of life.

Seoul topped the list with an overall score of 73.60, boasting 59.67 places to work per square kilometer, 172.94 going-out options, and 10.74 cultural venues. The South Korean capital also recorded the fastest internet download speed among the top ten at 69.27 Mbps, and its affordability score of 63.99 indicated prices roughly 36% lower than a US baseline of 100.

Tokyo followed closely with a score of 72.61, offering 56.43 work spots per square kilometer and an affordability score of 65.66. The Japanese capital excelled in leisure, with 395.12 going-out venues per square kilometer—more than double Seoul’s count—and 12.71 cultural venues per square kilometer.

Hanoi took third place with 71.86 points, featuring the highest concentration of work spots in the top ten at 96.88 per square kilometer and prices nearly 71% below the US benchmark. The Vietnamese city also enjoyed 180 comfortable working days, far exceeding Seoul’s 105 and Tokyo’s 103, though its national download speed lagged at 16.12 Mbps.

Taipei secured fourth with a score of 70.98, offering 48.24 work spots per square kilometer, 295.77 going-out venues, and 10.71 cultural venues, with prices around 57% lower than the US baseline. Osaka rounded out the top five with 70.15 points, providing 350.27 going-out options per square kilometer—second only to Tokyo—and 45.80 work spots per square kilometer.

Barcelona claimed sixth place with 68.11 points, benefiting from Spain’s fastest national upload speed in the top 15 at 36.71 Mbps. The city offered 104.83 going-out options and 8.97 cultural venues per square kilometer, along with 164 comfortable working days. Madrid followed in seventh with 66.67 points, sharing the same national internet and price scores as Barcelona but trailing in city-specific metrics.

São Paulo took eighth with 66.67 points, boasting the highest number of comfortable working days in the top ten at 252 and prices around 53% lower than the US benchmark.
