Takachiho Gorge & Manai Falls: Japan's Mythological Roots in Miyazaki, Kyushu

SUBSCRIBE:

We visit Takachiho, located in the very north of Miyazaki Prefecture in Nishiusuki District, to witness one of Kyushu’s famous scenic spots, Takachiho Gorge.

Takachiho Gorge is a narrow chasm formed by the lava that erupted from Mt. Aso a very long time ago, and over time sculpted by the Gokase River due to water erosion. Inside the gorge is the Manai waterfall, and has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 waterfalls. You can enjoy the sights via two methods. The first is rental boats, which allows you to get up close and personal with the natural surroundings. The second option being a relaxing stroll via the Takachiho Promenade which allows views from above.

Takachiho is not just renowned for its scenic beauty, but the area is steeped in Japanese mythology and legend. According to Japanese mythology, Takachiho is the land where Ninigi descended from the heavens, sent by Amaterasu, the sun goddess. It contains the Ama-no-Iwato shrine which is, according to myth, the location of the cave where Amaterasu hid until Ame-no-Uzume lured her out.

Takachiho local belief considers the island in the center of Onokoro Pond near Takachiho Gorge to be Onokoro Shima, the place where Izanami and Izanagi married, lived, and gave birth to the islands of Japan. In this belief, Takachiho is where the Japanese archipelago, both its natural formations and its inhabitants, was born.
