Kim Min-seok, a candidate for leader of the ruling Democratic Party, said he once discussed a photo of U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un with Trump at the White House.
Speaking on the 16th about Trump’s social media post the previous day — a photo of Trump with Kim Jong-un taken at Panmunjom in June 2019 and shared on Truth Social — the candidate said, “When I met President Trump at the White House, he asked to have that photo brought in, and we talked about it.” He added, “At the time, I did not disclose this out of consideration for North Korea’s position.”
“Every time I met President Trump and Vice President Vance, they asked about the North Korea issue,” Kim said. “I believe the White House has both interest and will. The question is our own wise role.”
Kim visited the United States on March 13 during his tenure as prime minister and met with Trump. He outlined a plan to “pursue visits to the United States, China and Japan within the year and conduct bipartisan party diplomacy if I become party leader.”
Earlier, Trump posted the photo with Kim Jong-un on Truth Social on the 15th, writing, “In this picture we don’t look too friendly, but we have many pictures where we are laughing. Kim Jong Un and I GET ALONG GREAT!”
