We Looked for a Campsite — and Found a Life Off the Map
On Day 39 of our overland journey across Russia toward the Altai Mountains, we were simply looking for a quiet place to camp. After 4,300 km (2,670 miles) in our Ural 6×6 expedition motorhome, this episode begins with the everyday side of life on the road: how we choose a wild campsite and what diesel, food, and comfortable motorhome living really cost.
Near Yelabuga, Tatarstan, the road simply ended among the white chalk quarries. We unloaded our Can-Am Defender to find another way—and discovered sheer drop-offs, abandoned machinery, a private fish farm, an off-grid community powered by solar energy, and a brief, unexpected encounter with women carrying a homemade crossbow, including a discussion about our camera.
In this episode:
🔎 How scouting a wild campsite turns into an expedition—and why distance from the road, water, and 4G all matter;
🏔️ The otherworldly chalk quarries of Tatarstan, with white cliffs, steep drop-offs, and abandoned machinery;
🚙 A buggy ride along the Kama River toward Kotlovskaya Shishka over rough terrain;
🐟 A private farm with fresh fish and an off-grid community powered by solar energy;
🦢 Mute swans and a brief, unexpected encounter with women carrying a homemade crossbow, including a discussion about our camera;
🔥 Finishing smoked fish in the motorhome oven—and why two extra freezers replaced our TV.
