Today I’m taking you behind the counter in Japan at Marufuku Kyoto, a family run Japanese bento and sozai shop just three minutes from the Kyoto City Central Wholesale Market. Sozai are Japanese prepared side dishes commonly served alongside home cooked meals, and this local Kyoto food shop uses fresh seafood sourced through the family’s generations old fish wholesale business to create everything from traditional Japanese cuisine to sashimi, sushi, and bento. Yoshimi san has been running the shop for five years, but its story began during one of her family business’s most difficult periods. During the pandemic, restaurant closures devastated their seafood wholesale business, leaving them with excess inventory and few customers. With no restaurant experience and a background in fashion, Yoshimi stepped in to help save the business. Around the same time, Ichimura san, an experienced Japanese chef who had worked in Kyoto’s historic Gion district, was looking for a new opportunity. He joined as head chef, developing the menu while teaching Yoshimi the fundamentals of Japanese cooking. Their relationship was not always easy, but years of working together built a deep sense of trust. Today, their ability to listen to customers and constantly create new Japanese food has transformed this small fish market bento shop into a favorite among Kyoto locals.

  1. Wow..!! What a great video. I love that every thing is made from scratch and is affordable yet delicious.

  2. this is by far the most meaningful and great people and storytelling. it’s really not about the work. i do believe what you are attract the kind of people around you. definitely going to visit when im there

  3. Hi Paolo, thank you so much for your amazing content! I especially enjoy this series so much! I would love to see "a day in the life of a speech therapist in japan" 🎉

  4. Just dawned on me that thus is part 2 of the previous video. Now I understand why they were released back to back. Stellar job, Paolo.

All the bentos look amazingly delicious! She's a fantastic businesswoman and leader — you can see how her entire team reflects her energy. Definitely somewhere I'd visit. 🍱 👌🏾

  5. I just exclaimed, Oh that's Chisa!, when she delivered fish like I'm a personal friend LOL Nice of you to feature their family businesses back-to-back.

  6. Damn dude, these 2 stories together were so well told by you and your crew. What an absolute joy this was to watch, I've seen both sisters videos, and how you tied it together with such a good message… BRAVO sir, bravo!

  7. I really loved the reflection at the end! It put a spotlight on each of them and how they all persevered despite each of their own respective hardships. Thanks for sharing their stories!

  8. When looking to grab bentos while traveling in Japan, I recommend the food courts around train stations or in larger department stores(often basement level). Their offerings are tasty & fresh due the high volume of people. Combini bento is ok but imo not the same value or as fresh.

  9. So cool how you have brought the normal Japan to life. We lived in Honshu near Ikego then kyushu in Dito for 7 1/2 years 96-2004, children attended Japanese schools and visit ther friends often. Great finding your channel. KEEP IT UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. Wow another great video and touching. Hope the elastic bands are reused. This Bento boxes are always so flimsy, can't they make a better one.

  11. Damn, never thought we will get a sequel but filmed in a way that it happens concurrently. Well done, Paolo.

  12. It breaks my heart to see these wonderful people working so hard just to make ends meet.
Japan has some serious structural-political problems right now, and it needs to sort them out, for the sake of its people 😥

  13. "가장 절제된 표현으로 최고의 풍미를 끌어내는 식문화"
정갈한 가이세키 요리부터 지친 하루 끝에 위로를 주는 따뜻한 라멘 한 그릇, 골목길의 바삭한 야키토리까지. 일본 음식은 정성과 섬세함으로 매 순간 우리에게 미식의 즐거움을 전해줍니다.

  14. Awesome video, definitely looks like a fun place to work at or visit. I could never go to that steak place either lol. The ladies are very beautiful. Love the atmosphere there and the food looks oishii desu. Kyoto is definitely on my bucket list and I will definitely have to visit this place.
