In the middle of a busy Belgian city stands an enormous abandoned mansion, almost completely surrounded by modern buildings. 🏚️🇧🇪
Reaching it was already an adventure. With the front exposed, our only possible route led across a semi-active company terrain and over a massive wall into the forgotten garden behind it.
Built during the city’s expansion in the late 19th century, this was once the grand home of a wealthy family. But it was more than a private residence: a doctor also received and treated his patients inside these walls.
During the exploration, documents, portraits and medical books begin to reveal the life of Dr. Robert and his connections to the medical world of Paris. Yet the deeper we go, the stranger the abandonment becomes.
Some rooms were emptied, while others contained valuable furniture and deeply personal belongings untouched. In the attic, tarps show that somebody once returned and tried to protect the mansion from further damage… but eventually, those efforts stopped too.
Why was the house only partly cleared? And what caused the family to finally turn their backs on this extraordinary place?

The mosaic floor in the piano room is spectacular
The townhouse is still beautiful even in such abandoned state. I would date it somewhere between 1900-1910. Since there's not much personal stuff left I assume it's existence it's known to legal inheritors but maybe there a dispute on court or something.

There were lead pipes in the house, some of the orange mold could be rusticles coming form the piping in the house and water leaking. Damp and cold equals mold and it doesn't have to be an abandoned house to grow mold if it is damp. The phones with the buttons on them are an early phone system.
I am sure if that mansion was in the U S it would be destroyed by everyone who went through it just to leave their mark or take souvenirs. There is a lot of wet rot in the beautiful home as well as dry rot. Wish someone would give a hand in saving it
