Hitachi, EneWill start Storing RE battery power certification service

Hitachi Ltd. and EneWill Co. have started a collaboration to certify the green value of renewable electricity stored in grid-connected battery facilities and use that certification in power sales, the companies said on Aug. 5.

The initiative is designed to build a new framework for certifying and visualizing the environmental value of renewable power supplied through batteries, using digital technology to support next-generation renewable power trading. EneWill has already begun supplying green electricity using Hitachi’s battery-stored power certification service, Storing RE. Third-party certification for the service is conducted by the Powered by RE Certification Committee, a Japanese general incorporated association.

In the first project, EneWill charged renewable electricity generated by a 1,500-kilowatt-ac solar plant owned and operated by Igarashi Holdings Co. into Nayoro No.1, a battery storage facility it owns and operates in Nayoro, Hokkaido. The battery station has output of 1,999 kilowatts and storage capacity of 8,128 kilowatt-hours.

The stored electricity is supplied on a time-shifted basis during periods of higher power demand and consumed at four nearby facilities. Storing RE is applied to that electricity, enabling hourly management and linkage of data covering generation, charging and discharging, and power receipt. That allows the environmental value of renewable electricity supplied through batteries to be digitally traced and certified.

Grid-scale battery storage in Japan refers to large standalone battery facilities connected directly to transmission and distribution networks, allowing them to charge and discharge independently. Such assets have drawn growing attention as renewable generation expands and utilities and power retailers seek more flexibility in balancing supply and demand.

The companies linked the project to proposed revisions to the GHG Protocol’s Scope 2 guidance, an international standard for greenhouse gas accounting. The revisions are moving toward stricter requirements on the timing and location of renewable electricity supply and demand matching. Hitachi and EneWill said the framework is part of preparations for power trading systems designed to conform to those revisions.
