36 Hours in Japan’s MOST UNDERRATED City

We spend two unforgettable days exploring Hiroshima, Japan, discovering whether one of Japan’s most historic cities deserves a spot on your Japan itinerary. From incredible Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki and famous maple desserts to the iconic floating torii gate of Miyajima, peaceful Japanese gardens, and moving historical landmarks, this turned out to be one of our favourite stops in Japan.

Our adventure begins with an authentic soba noodle lunch at Itasoba Kaoriya before taking the ferry across to Miyajima Island, one of Japan’s most beautiful destinations. Famous for its friendly wild deer and the breathtaking floating torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine… Miyajima quickly lives up to the hype.

While exploring the island, we try some of Miyajima’s most famous foods, including Hokkaido soft serve ice cream for the very first time, another local ice cream to compare, and far more maple cakes than we probably should have.

Back in Hiroshima, we finish the day with one of the city’s signature dishes, authentic Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, a layered Japanese savory pancake made from noodles that is completely different from the Osaka version.

On day two, we visit the Hiroshima Peace Memorial area to learn more about the city’s history before exploring Hiroshima Castle and wandering through the peaceful Shukkeien Garden, one of the most beautiful traditional Japanese gardens we’ve visited.

By the end of our time here, Hiroshima completely surprised us. We share our honest thoughts on whether it’s worth adding to your Japan itinerary and why we think this city deserves far more attention than it gets.

If you’re planning a trip to Japan and looking for the best things to do in Hiroshima, visiting Miyajima Island, seeing the famous floating torii gate, trying Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki, finding the best food in Hiroshima, exploring Hiroshima Castle, Shukkeien Garden, or building the perfect Japan itinerary, this video is for you!
