First Time in Kumamoto (day trip from Fukuoka!) 🐻

Kumamoto is easy to overlook when you’re based in Fukuoka. It’s close enough for a day trip, but just far enough that most people skip it. We didn’t, and it was worth it.

We started at Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s most iconic feudal castles and still in the middle of its long restoration following the 2016 earthquake.

Right next to it is Sakura-no-baba Josaien, a traditional shopping and dining area where we picked up some local snacks and Kumamoto specialties.

From there we made our way over to the Shimotori area for ramen lunch, then spent the afternoon at Suizenji Jojuen, a 400-year-old landscape garden that’s a lot more impressive in person than it looks in photos.
