The dollar-yen pair traded with a slightly soft tone during Tokyo foreign exchange market trading on the morning of the 27th, in a session lacking clear direction. After falling to 163.55 yen in early trading, the pair saw a brief rebound to 163.71 yen around mid-morning in the 7 o’clock hour, but upside resistance proved firm, pushing it back down to 163.52 yen by mid-morning in the 9 o’clock hour. It subsequently recovered modestly to around 163.59 yen.
Meanwhile, the euro showed firm price action against both the yen and the dollar. Euro-yen climbed from 186.31 yen to 186.64 yen and is currently holding near the upper end of that range at around 186.58 yen. Euro-dollar also rose from $1.1386 to $1.1413 and is now trading around $1.1406.
According to market participants, the Tokyo market at the start of the week lacked any significant fresh catalysts, with major currency pairs all confined to narrow trading ranges. Dollar-yen continues to consolidate around the mid-163 yen level, unable to find a clear directional bias.
The euro’s firmness is seen as driven by speculation regarding the European Central Bank’s (ECB) monetary policy stance and buying interest following regional economic indicators. The euro was bought against both the dollar and the yen, with euro strength particularly notable in cross-yen trading.
The yen also held a slight advantage against the dollar, suggesting persistent pressure from dollar-selling and yen-buying flows. Market participants pointed to awareness of the diverging monetary policy directions between Japan and the U.S., as well as month-end real demand flows.

Looking ahead in Tokyo trading, market sentiment is expected to be shaped by speculation ahead of the Bank of Japan’s monetary policy meeting and a cautious stance as participants seek to gauge the direction of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Among market participants, whether dollar-yen can maintain the 163-yen level is seen as a near-term focal point.
Attention is also focused on whether the euro can extend its upward momentum. If euro-yen tests the upper 186-yen range, it could have ripple effects across cross-yen pairs more broadly.
