Weather officials in Japan say intense heat is expected again on Wednesday across wide areas of the country, urging people to take measures against heatstroke.
The Meteorological Agency said a high pressure system covered the country on Tuesday, causing temperatures to climb to dangerous levels in many areas.
The daytime high reached 40.3 degrees Celsius in Tajimi City in Gifu Prefecture. Toyota City in Aichi Prefecture recorded its highest temperature ever at 40.1 degrees. The mercury hit 39.7 degrees in Nagoya City and 38.2 degrees in Kyoto City.
Weather officials expect temperatures to rise again on Wednesday to similar levels across wide areas. They forecast daytime highs of 40 degrees in Kumagaya City, Kofu City and Nagoya City. Temperatures are expected to climb to 39 degrees in Maebashi City, 38 degrees in Kyoto City and 37 degrees in central Tokyo.
The agency has issued heatstroke alerts in 41 prefectures from the Tohoku region to Okinawa. It is advising people to use air conditioners, drink adequate amounts of water and take salt to avoid heatstroke, as well as avoid long periods of outdoor activity.
