Kimimachizaka Guided Tour & Kumiko Woodcraft Experience in Noshiro, Akita
Where romance meets the “Wood Capital” of Japan.
This half-day cultural experience in Noshiro begins with a guided walk through Kimimachizaka Park, where two local stories come together. Learn how Emperor Meiji gave the park its name after receiving a heartfelt letter from Empress Shoken, and discover why this scenic spot has become a symbol of love and romance in Japan.
Along the way, visit the Love Letter Shrine to dedicate a heart-shaped ema and send a postcard from the park’s special Love Letter Postbox, where it will be delivered with a limited-edition commemorative postmark.
The journey continues with a hands-on kumiko woodworking workshop using locally sourced Akita cedar. Once known as the Wood Capital of Japan, Noshiro has a rich woodworking heritage shaped by the forests and the Yoneshiro River. Create your own handcrafted coaster or necklace while discovering the craftsmanship that has been passed down through generations.
Finish your experience with a relaxing cup of Hiyama tea, one of Japan’s northernmost locally produced teas.
This experience is more than sightseeing—it’s an opportunity to discover the stories, traditions, and craftsmanship that continue to shape Noshiro today.
