Accompanied by the sounds of Gion Bayashi, Kyoto in July is completely immersed in the Gion Festival. With a history spanning over a thousand years, the Gion Festival is a month-long series of diverse ceremonies held at Yasaka Shrine, running from July 1 (Kichifu-iri) to July 31 (Ekijinja Natsugoshi Festival). In particular, the Yamahoko Processions on the 17th (Ma-matsuri) and the 24th (Ato-matsuri), as well as the Yoiyama events preceding each, draw huge crowds, enveloping the city of Kyoto in the excitement of the festival.
