International tourists can purchase individual tickets for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen high-speed trains through a platform based in the United Kingdom. The service is launching on the Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Osaka routes, and travelers receive a QR code that allows them to proceed directly to the boarding gates without picking up a physical ticket.
The British platform JRPass.com, which specializes in selling Japanese rail products to foreign tourists, has begun offering individual tickets for high-speed trains on the Tōkaidō Shinkansen line.
The company thus becomes the first authorized distributor based outside Japan—and without an office in the country—that can sell such tickets directly to international travelers.
The service is provided through a partnership with JR Tokai Tours, the travel agency of the JR Central group and the official ticket provider for the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.
Initial Routes: Tokyo–Kyoto and Tokyo–Osaka
At launch, tickets are available for two of Japan’s busiest rail routes:
Tokyo–Kyoto;
Tokyo–Osaka.
Prices for a one-way trip start at approximately 16,500–17,000 yen, depending on the route chosen and the exchange rate applied at the time of booking. All tickets include a reserved seat, though the seat is automatically assigned by the Japanese operator’s reservation system.
Tickets can initially be purchased up to 30 days before travel. The platform plans to extend the booking period to 180 days as the system is developed.
Direct Access with a QR Code
Passengers no longer need to pick up a printed ticket from a ticket counter or a vending machine at the station.
After making a reservation, they receive a QR code, which is scanned at the Shinkansen gates marked with the yellow “QR” symbol.
Upon entry, the system issues a document containing information about the railcar and seat. Upon exiting the destination station, the passenger scans the same QR code again.
This process is made possible by the integration of JR Tokai Tours with the EX digital reservation system of JR Central, the railway company that operates the Tōkaidō Shinkansen.
An Alternative to the Japan Rail Pass
The new offer is aimed specifically at tourists who do not need a nationwide rail pass.
Japan Rail Pass, the pass designed for foreign visitors, can be advantageous for long trips and itineraries involving multiple journeys. However, for a tourist who only wants to travel between Tokyo and Kyoto or Osaka, purchasing a single ticket may be more suitable.
JRPass.com states that the new product allows travelers to pay only for the routes they actually intend to use.
The British platform has been selling Japanese rail products since 2008 and says it has provided Japan Rail Passes to customers in over 100 countries.
Changes allowed up to six hours in advance
Reservations can be changed up to six hours before departure.
Changing the travel time is free if the same day, route, and class are maintained. To change the date, route, class, or number of passengers, you must cancel the reservation and purchase a new ticket.
Cancellations made before departure are subject to a 10% fee, and refunds are typically processed within seven days.
The service is available in English, with other languages to be added in the future.
The world’s busiest high-speed rail line
The Tōkaidō Shinkansen connects Tokyo, Nagoya, Kyoto, and Osaka and is considered the world’s busiest high-speed rail line.
For tourists, however, purchasing tickets has sometimes been complicated by differences in booking platforms, payment terms, and the need to pick up travel documents after arriving in Japan.
Through the new agreement, JR Central aims to simplify access for international visitors without abandoning its own reservation and ticketing system.
For now, the offer is limited to the two routes departing from Tokyo. JRPass.com has not announced when other destinations or tickets for return trips might be introduced.
