TOKYO (Kyodo) — A powerful typhoon swept across Japan’s southern prefecture of Okinawa on Saturday, bringing violent winds and heavy rain that left some residents injured.
Typhoon Bavi packed winds of up to 144 kilometers per hour over Okinawa’s Miyako Island, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. As of Saturday, five people had sustained minor injuries related to strong winds and high waves, the prefectural government said.
Japan Airlines Co. and All Nippon Airways Co. have reported cancellations for flights to and from Okinawa and the Amami region in southwestern Japan’s Kagoshima Prefecture.
The season’s ninth typhoon has moved away from Japan.
