A two-day trip to see Japan’s famous snow monkeys turned into something I didn’t see coming.

Nestled in the Japanese Alps, Nagano is known for ancient temples, breathtaking mountain landscapes, and the iconic Japanese macaques of Jigokudani. Like most travelers, I came for one of Japan’s most famous wildlife experiences.
I didn’t expect to leave with a question instead.
Watching generations of macaques pass down behaviors learned purely through observation, I started thinking about everything we inherit without ever choosing it — beliefs, traditions, entire identities, handed down before we’re old enough to ask for them.

How much of who we are is actually ours? And how much was just… passed on?
