Super Typhoon Bavi eyes Taiwan, Okinawa after battering Guam
Incredibly large, powerful Super Typhoon Bavi’s cloud field extends over 1,000 miles
Everything is currently quiet across the Atlantic Basin, but that is not the case right now in the western Pacific. Super Typhoon Bafi continues to make its way towards the west. This is the latest update coming in from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center, moving towards the west-northwest at 18 miles an hour, but look at the maximum winds, 155 miles an hour. It’s forecast to continue to make its way towards the west-northwest, and eventually northwest, getting close towards Taiwan and also China by the weekend. And of course, Scott, like we mentioned, everything quiet right now. The Atlantic. But when do you think it’s going to start to pick up? I really think for the next 6 weeks we look really calm. I dare to say the word quiet. We know the moment you say the Q word, that’s when things start to get more active. Here’s the deal. We’re looking at *** potentially record breaking El Nino, and what that means is very warm waters in the east central Pacific that typically promotes *** lot of rising motion and *** lot of tropical activity, tropical storms, hurricanes, and major. Hurricanes in the eastern Pacific. The good news about storms being on the east side of the Pacific is that that typically promotes much less activity in the Caribbean and the deep tropics. One area that’s worth watching though, especially as we go into August, September, and October, is the northern Gulf Coast and off the coast of the southeastern United States. But as Derek mentioned, all calm for now except for Super Typhoon Bafi in the Westpac.
