With summer travel in full swing, Canadians are looking to Japan for their July getaways. Information provided to Yahoo Canada by Skyscanner revealed a 61 per cent year-over-year increase in July flight bookings to Tokyo from Canadian cities.
“With summer travel in full swing, Tokyo is becoming a top destination for Canadians seeking to combine culture, world-class dining, and unique experiences in a single trip,” Laura Lindsay, Skyscanner’s travel trends and destinations expert, shared. “Known for centuries-old traditions and ultra-modern cityscapes, Japan’s capital offers world-famous food, pop culture, historic temples, busy neighbourhoods and nightlife.”
Why is Tokyo such a popular destination for Canadian travellers?
According to Skyscanner’s 2026 Travel Trends, 34 per cent of travellers plan to visit local supermarkets or grocery stores, and with 7-Eleven and FamilyMart hauls from Japan consistently trending online, that’s among the draws to the destination, in addition to Tokyo’s broader food scene.
Tokyo also appeals to several travellers due to its distinct neighbourhoods.
“Travellers can experience the bright lights and energy of Shinjuku, the fashion and nightlife scene of Shibuya, the historic streets of Asakusa, and the upscale shopping districts of Ginza, all within the same trip,” Lindsay highlighted. “This variety allows visitors to enjoy multiple travel experiences without ever leaving the city.”
