Japan’s Foreign Minister Motegi Toshimitsu has conveyed to his Ukrainian counterpart his country’s stance that it will never waver in its consistent position of standing with Ukraine.
He told Andrii Sybiha, visiting Tokyo, that Japan will continue to support Kyiv and maintain sanctions against Russia to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The two met at the Iikura Guest House in Tokyo Wednesday evening for talks and a working dinner. The meeting lasted about two hours.
On Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Motegi said Japan will not tolerate any unilateral attempts to change the status quo by force.
He expressed readiness to continue to work on public-private partnership assistance for recovery and reconstruction in Ukraine.
He said Japan will provide assistance through UNESCO for the restoration of the World Heritage site Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra monastery, which was damaged by Russian attacks.
The two ministers later signed and exchanged notes concerning a grant aid project to foster young civil servants.
At a joint press conference, Motegi said Japan will continue its close cooperation with Ukraine to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Sybiha expressed deep gratitude for Japan’s assistance, and said he has faith Japan will walk with Ukraine through its recovery period.
