This Tiny Scottish Town Has RUBIES on the Beach | Elie, Fife Coast

Today we’re in Elie, a Scottish seaside town on the Fife Coast. Most travellers miss it on their way to St Andrews. It’s worth a look! Incredible beach and lovely harbour.

On this beach you can search for genuine garnets — locals call them “Elie rubies”. And just along the cliff stands a tower built in 1770 for Lady Janet Anstruther, who insisted on swimming in the sea, naked.

Elie’s railway station opened in 1863 and fell victim to the Beeching cuts, closing on the 6th of September 1965. Today the Station Buffet Bar keeps the memory alive.

The Parish Church dates back to 1639, with its octagonal tower. From Elie Ness, you can see the Bass Rock — the world’s largest northern gannet colony — and the Elie Ness Lighthouse, engineered by David Stevenson.

There’s beach cricket at the Ship Inn where we’ll sample the beer in their “Beer Beach”.

  1. I'm imagining that beach will be full of people searching now (and I'll be one of them!) Followed by a beer at the Ship Inn 🙂

  2. Have you been to Elie? Did you find an Elie Ruby? Please tell me your stories in the comments below. Thanks for watching! 😊

  3. this is definitely a gem of a video 💎
IMO this could be the prettiest town you've visited so far on your travels, great drone shots, lovely looking scampering about churchyard, beautiful beach/sea with plenty of seating to take in the view AND a lighthouse, doesn't get much better than that ❣️

  4. Gorgeous little town, it reminded me of North Berwick. I find it interesting that Elie and Ely in East Anglia are pronounced the same way. I will never forget when I was at Norwich train station and then asked a man which was the train that goes to Ely ( I pronounced it E-lie) and he said "What?-oh you meant E-lee!" haha.

  5. Yet another gem, Roger, in Elie, which I'd never heard of! Accessible by public transport via Leven, which is great. You sure pick them, & you definitely deserved that beer! 👍.

  6. Elie is a stunning place to visit. Been there many a time. Great shot of the shoreline with the drone.

  7. Stunning views Roger.
You do have some picturesque places in Scotland.
Such a shame you can't take any of the 'rubies' away – I was going to ask you to send me one ha ha ❤ Cathy

  8. Nice video. Yeah, the anti-tank blocks were part of the 1940 Fife Stop-line and designed to delay invading mechanised forces long enough to mount a counter-attack.

  9. Hi Rog.
Another brilliant Saturday Video and I visited Ellie about 25 years ago.
Did you know, The most famous painting "THE DANCING WAITER" by Jack Vettriano featured the beach at Ellie???
The village is small & compact & so clean & well kept. Very welcoming
    Thanks again Rog

  10. It was 2 years ago on a gorgeous day at Elie Beach, my daughter, dogs, and me walked into the path where a man was proposing.
    She said yes!
They had champagne, it was lovely.
    I wonder if they're married yet 🩵🩷

  11. My dad had holidays in Elie growing up in the sixties and seventies and we used to go on Day Trips with him when I was growing up. Elie is lovely, usually park in the car park and walk over to the lighthouse if I am coming back from Crail or Anstruther.

    Another excellent video.

  12. RogEdwardsTV – thanks for this video post. Have you ever tried for a voice over role on TV? You are very easy to listen to. 👍🏻

  13. That story about the Lady in the tower was classic. 😂 We spent the day by the water here…Lake Erie. No beer but some very good ice cream.

  14. What a belter day Rog, my wife and I went there last year. I had my camera on a mega long pole to get drone type footage 😂 people kept looking. There was a warship parked offshore HMS Iron Duke if I remember. Elie is a beautiful wee seaside town.
