Nagano is often treated as a quick stop for snow monkeys, skiing or a simple side trip from Tokyo, but this mountain prefecture has far more depth than many visitors realise. In this video, I take a closer look at why Nagano deserves more than one day, from the ancient grounds of Zenkoji Temple to Matsumoto Castle, Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, Togakushi’s cedar avenue and the region’s serious soba culture.

We begin in Nagano City at Zenkoji, one of Japan’s most important temples, where the underground Okaidan passage leads visitors through complete darkness in search of a hidden key. From there, the journey continues to Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan’s most impressive original castle keeps, before heading into the mountains to see the snow monkeys of Jigokudani and the huge cedar trees of Togakushi.
