Japan and Sweden will face off Thursday evening in Dallas Stadium, the fourth of nine FIFA World Cup games in Dallas.
Fans have already been tasked with navigating North Texas’ extreme summer heat, and temperatures are only forecast to rise.
Here’s what to know about the forecast for Thursday’s game.
Triple-digit temperatures are now expected by the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office to arrive as soon as this weekend, but not in time for Japan and Sweden’s match.
Thursday’s high is forecast to be 97 degrees with a low of 77, according to the weather service. The heat index, or “feels like” temperature, could rise to 101.
Temperatures are expected to peak around 5 p.m., so fans headed to Dallas Stadium (AT&T Stadium) or one of the region’s plethora of watch parties should plan to take precautions to beat the heat.
Texas A&M University College of Medicine professor Dr. Paul Ou previously shared with The Dallas Morning News that these precautions include drinking one to two bottles of water an hour, moderating alcohol consumption – which can dehydrate – wearing a hat, applying sunscreen and monitoring for signs of heat exhaustion. Symptoms include dry mouth, fatigue and dizziness.
Though the match itself will be under the stadium’s closed retractable roof, walks from public transportation and parking spots will still expose match attendees to the heat.
Sunny skies are predicted throughout the day, given the 1% chance of precipitation forecast by the weather service. High humidity is also possible.
