You probably have a number of trousers in your wardrobe – tailored styles, linen designs, everyday denim heroes, and perhaps even dressy satin trousers – but few can match the level of breezy comfort you’d get from your best pyjama trousers. Happily for us, pyjama trousers have officially graduated from the bedroom, and just in time for the heatwave.

Cool girls have been styling their nightwear out and about for a few seasons now (case in point, the nightie becoming the dress of the summer last season). But pyjama trousers, as worn by editors and influencers alike, have emerged as the most wearable take on the trend so far. Largely made from comfortable summer-friendly fabrics like cotton and linen, these trousers are the best thing you can wear when the weather apps flash 33°C. As well as the breathable fabrics, PJs also come with an elasticated waist.

Despite, or perhaps because of their relaxed, nonchalant flair, pyjama trousers have become an increasingly common sight on cool girls in London. For a polished everyday take, LESET’s Kyoto trousers are a cult favourite, perfect for wearing with easy T-shirts and flip-flops. Elsewhere, Deiji Studios is another brand to note. Based in Australia, the brand crafts brilliant loungewear, including breezy trousers detailed with checks, stripes and even frill-trimmed pockets. Closer home, Damson Madder’s PJs blur the line between nightwear and ready-to-wear, taking on trendy silhouettes and prints, from balloon trousers to polka dot designs.

Comfy as they are, pyjama trousers require a fair bit of styling to avoid looking like you’ve literally rolled out of bed. If you’re heading for a relaxed errand run, a tank top and matching shirt are probably fair game. For a weekend brunch or picnic, a ruffled boho blouse is a safer bet, especially when worn with ballet flats or heeled flip-flops. It’s also perfect for wearing with swimsuits on a beach day. While not usually appropriate for work, if your workplace, like mine, operates with a more relaxed dress code, smarten up your trousers with an oversized button-down and loafers.

So with the heat levels rising to dangerous levels this week, it might be a good idea to bid goodbye to jeans and live in stretch-waist comfort for the foreseeable.
