🔴 A leisurely stroll through Japan. Yanaka is a very charming town in Tokyo that retains a strong “”old-fashioned downtown atmosphere.”” While very close to Ueno, it’s a little different from the hustle and bustle of the city with its towering skyscrapers; a nostalgic and peaceful atmosphere prevails.
What makes Yanaka special is that it relatively escaped damage from the Great Kanto Earthquake and wartime destruction, so many old townscapes and temples still remain. Walking through the narrow alleys, you’ll find wooden houses and old-fashioned shops, making you feel as if you’ve traveled back in time to the Showa era.
Particularly famous is Yanaka Ginza Shopping Street. This approximately 170-meter-long shopping street is lined with delicatessens, Japanese confectionery shops, cafes, and general stores, making it a great place to enjoy street food. Many people can be seen strolling around with minced meat cutlets or croquettes in hand, creating a warm atmosphere where locals and tourists naturally mingle. Yanaka is also known as a “”cat town.”” Not only are there many cats living there, but there are also numerous cat-themed shops and cafes scattered throughout the area. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter cats napping peacefully in the back alleys or temple grounds.
Furthermore, there are over 70 temples in the surrounding area. The sunset view from Yuuyake Dandan (Sunset Steps) is particularly famous; the sight of the setting sun over the shopping street bathing the entire town in orange is breathtaking, attracting many people who stop to admire it.
In recent years, the number of cafes and galleries housed in renovated old houses has increased, attracting young artists and creators. Therefore, Yanaka exudes a unique charm as a town that cherishes the old while embracing new culture.
If you want to enjoy the character of a town in Tokyo at a leisurely pace, without rushing, Yanaka is the perfect place. The sound of temple bells, the flowers blooming in the alleys, the voices of people in the shopping streets, and the carefree cats—all contribute to a wonderful experience. As you walk, making small discoveries like these, you’ll encounter another side of Tokyo.
