Scientists at Osaka Metropolitan University have created an artificial photosynthesis system that generates solar fuels with enhanced stability. This device integrates a self-regulating chemical element directly into the electrolyzer, bypassing the need for a battery-powered control mechanism and removing a costly component from such setups.

Like its natural counterpart, artificial photosynthesis employs sunlight to transform water and carbon dioxide into valuable fuels, including formic acid. Within these systems, the electrolyzer is essential, converting electricity from solar cells into chemical energy that can be stored as formic acid fuel.

To maintain efficient energy conversion under varying sunlight, many systems utilize Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT), a technique that continuously modifies voltage and current to optimize solar cell power output. However, MPPT systems often depend on batteries or extra electronics to regulate energy flow, raising both expense and system intricacy.

A team led by Associate Professor Yasuo Matsubara and Professor Yutaka Amao at the Research Center for Artificial Photosynthesis, Osaka Metropolitan University, working with Iida Group Holdings Co., Ltd, reengineered the setup by embedding a specialized solid electrolyte into the electrolyzer. In this revised design, the electrolyzer autonomously handles the MPPT function, removing the requirement for batteries.

Rather than relying on external electronics, batteries, and converters to keep the solar cell operating efficiently, the electrolyzer independently adjusts its electrical characteristics through its thermal and impedance properties. As sunlight intensifies, the electrolyzer warms up, which lowers its electrical resistance and facilitates freer electricity flow. This automatic adjustment helps sustain consistent fuel production throughout the day and lessens reliance on batteries and expensive external parts.

During testing of a device incorporating this technology, it consistently produced formic acid from water and carbon dioxide under actual sunlight, even with fluctuating light levels. The researchers had previously demonstrated this work at the Joint Pavilion Iida Group x Osaka Metropolitan University exhibition during the Osaka Kansai Expo 2025. At that event, the system produced sufficient formic acid to operate a small diorama, highlighting its promise as an effective artificial photosynthesis system that could eventually power household applications.
