TOKYO – A woman has been sentenced to 27 years in prison on Monday for forcing a 17-year-old girl to fall off a bridge in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, resulting in her death.

According to the ruling of the Asahikawa District Court, in April 2024, Riko Uchida, 23, along with a 21-year-old female acquaintance, confined the high school student in a car, stripped the girl naked, made her sit on the railing of a bridge and told her “Die” and “Fall,” before she fell into the river, where she drowned.

As a judge explained the contents of the ruling, a man suddenly burst into the courtroom, shouting and jumping over the railing of the spectator seats. The man shouted things like, “It should be the death penalty!” and “What’s with this 27-year sentence?” before being apprehended by staff.
