The ensembles of the Hungarian State Opera are going on a tour of Japan, presenting Mozart’s The Magic Flute in twelve cities until July 4.
Italian lyric soprano Désirée Rancatore and Polish coloratura soprano Aleksandra Olczyk will also take the stage with the 113-member ensemble of the Hungarian State Opera. Miklós Szinetár’s 2014 production will be seen again in the Asian island country after four years, between June 21 and July 4, the opera house announced.
The series of performances, which will visit theater and concert venues in twelve cities including Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, and Nagoya, will also feature Polish soprano Katarzyna Drelich and Ukrainian coloratura soprano Tatjana Zsuravel.
The guest artists’ Hungarian partners in the main roles will include:
István Horváth and Tibor Szappanos (Tamino)
Laura Topolánszky and Zsuzsanna Kapi (Pamina)
István Kovács and Krisztián Cser (Sarastro)
Zsolt Haja (Papageno)
Péter Balczó (Monostatos).
The Opera Orchestra and Choir will, as in the tour four years ago, be conducted by Sámuel Csaba Tóth.
The Hungarian State Opera is carrying out its 12th Japan tour since 2001, as a result of cooperation between Japanese cultural manager Masayuki Kobayashi and Miklós Szinetár, the Opera’s former general director.
The ensemble last visited Japan in autumn 2022—also with Mozart’s popular The Magic Flute and the Hungarian opera icon Andrea Rost in the role of Pamina. By resuming its touring tradition, the Budapest Opera House once again reinforces its reputation as a cultural ambassador of world standing.
