The Japanese government has decided to significantly increase visa fees for foreign visitors, raising single-entry visa costs fivefold to 15,000 yen (about $90) from 3,000 yen starting in July, according to officials on Friday, News.Az reports, citing Kyodo.
This marks the first such increase since 1978 and comes amid inflation and a weakening yen.
Fees for multiple-entry visas, which allow travellers to enter Japan several times over a set period, will also increase from 6,000 yen to 30,000 yen.
Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said during a press conference that the government does not expect the change to have an immediate impact on inbound tourism.
The adjustments are aimed at bringing Japan’s visa issuance fees closer to levels seen in other Group of Seven countries.
