Assam could soon host one of the most significant international delegations to visit the Northeast in recent years, with reports indicating that Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is expected to travel to the state in July, accompanied by senior executives from some of Japan’s largest corporations.
According to Nikkei Asia, the proposed visit will centre on strengthening economic ties, exploring new investment opportunities and expanding industrial collaboration between Japan and India, particularly in the strategically important Northeast region.
The delegation is reportedly expected to include representatives from major Japanese companies such as Suzuki Motor, Itochu Corporation and Toyota Tsusho, the trading arm of Toyota Motor.
The development comes weeks after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hinted that the state was preparing to welcome a major global leader, though he did not publicly identify the visiting dignitary at the time.
If the visit proceeds as planned, it will mark Takaichi’s first trip to India since assuming office as Japan’s Prime Minister in October 2025.
The Northeast has emerged as a key pillar of this partnership. Through the India-Japan Act East Forum, launched in 2017, Tokyo has supported a range of infrastructure, connectivity and public utility projects across the region.
Japanese assistance has contributed to the development of roads, bridges and water supply systems, helping improve connectivity and economic integration.
