Market Overview
On the 18th, the Nikkei Average surged sharply for the sixth straight session, closing up 1,151 points at 71,053. Although the FOMC kept interest rates unchanged as widely expected, the statement was perceived as hawkish, prompting all three major U.S. indices to decline. Nevertheless, the Nikkei opened more than 200 points higher despite the U.S. market weakness. The strong open added momentum to the rally, quickly expanding gains into four-digit territory early in the session.
