DESIGNBOOM’S TOUR THROUGH OSAKA ART & DESIGN 2026
Osaka Art & Design (OAD) 2026 returns to transform the city’s streets, galleries, and industrial landmarks into an expansive creative trail running until June 23. Stepping into this year’s edition, the event reveals a distinct shift in direction, taking on a noticeably more art-oriented character than its previous iterations. Under the fresh curatorial vision of art-focused producer Shinichiro Masui, OAD 2026 builds upon its design roots to cultivate a deeper, more ambitious fine art dialogue across the cityscape. Guided by the theme ‘Infinitize Your Creation / Imagination,’ it acts as a breeding ground of imagination featuring a range of global artists and works that embed expressive artistic practices open to interpretation.
From typographic works to tactile sculptures, the OAD 2026 program anchors itself on focused curatorial narratives and immersive, site-specific installations, fostering a deeper awareness of contemporary art. designboom embarks on the official press tour to bring you the most compelling highlights from across Osaka – scroll down to check out our curated selection.

‘AUTONOMA’ CONFRONTS THE CONCEPT OF A CONTROLLED WORLD
The journey across Osaka’s creative scene begins right at the W Osaka Hotel, an official OAD partner serving as designboom’s design-forward accommodation during the event. Renowned for its bold, playful interior design that mirrors the high-energy spirit of the city, the hotel acts as an extension of the event itself. On the first floor of the art-infused hotel, guests are met with an unexpected intersection of technology and art: ‘AUTONOMA’ by studio xorium.
The site-specific installation, running until June 23, confronts the concept of a ‘controlled world’, through the metaphorical use of drifting bubbles. A sleek device continuously generates a delicate stream of spheres, with each bubble symbolizing a human being acting as an independent entity. As they float through the space, they touch, huddle together, and occasionally repel one another, eventually merging into a single, expansive current. Fragile enough to vanish at the slightest contact, these bubbles flexibly adapt to the shifting air currents, serving as a visually captivating metaphor for how humanity might navigate and thrive in an ever-evolving world.

WOOD, CONCRETE, AND METAL TRANSLATED INTO SCULPTURAL ALPHABETS
Inside the gallery space of PARCO, Takenobu Igarashi’s ‘A-Z Homage’ exhibition, from May 22 to June 14, gives continuity to a long-term collaboration between the designer and the creative hub. The showcase bridges both Igarashi’s typographic work with his physical sculptural practice, including large-scale alphabet forms that explore materials such as wood, concrete, and metal. Extending beyond the gallery walls, a logo-themed building block bench shapes an open-air installation.

FROM MONOCHROME CANVAS TO PLAYFUL WOODEN SCULPTURES
At the Hankyu Umeda Main Store, artist Yuichiro Hirako builds a cohesive, narrative-driven identity across the department store with his exhibition ‘NON NATURE’ open until June 22. Hirako transforms the main entrance into a massive monochrome canvas covered in hand drawings. When stepping inside his black-and-white graphic gives way to a wooden sculpture installation positioned within the space’s atrium. Hirako’s playful characters and reimagined nature motifs, using a colorful design language, directly channel the humorous spirit of Osaka’s cultural landscape.

FORMER SHIPYARD BECOMES A STAGE FOR CONTEMPORARY ART
Reinforcing the impression of an increasingly ambitious, interconnected local art scene, the tour crossed paths with partner event ART OSAKA‘s Expanded Section at Kitakagaya from May 28 to June 1. Hosted at the Creative Center Osaka within the former Namura shipyard, the exhibition utilizes a venue that retains the memory of Japan’s modern industrial heritage. Spreading across multiple floors, the showcase breaks free from conventional gallery constraints. Instead, large-scale installations and site-specific contemporary art works are staged through the rugged architecture, creating an experience that feels like an immersive museum.

HAND-KNITTING TEXTILE WEAVES COLLECTIVE MEMORIES
Maito Otake transforms soft, hand-knitted fabric into a three-dimensional sculpture with ‘Weave, Connect, Open’. Situated at a bustling central urban hub until June 23, the work anchors the natural flow of the city. The installation represents the literal and metaphorical knots that bind together time, collective memory, and local culture. With this monument the artist establishes a poetic conduit, connecting historic narratives.
