Malaysian ambassador to Japan Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Tokyo from June 8-10 would strengthen collaboration between the two countries.
TOKYO: Malaysia and Japan are expected to ink four memorandums of cooperation and two letters of intent during Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s official visit to Japan.
Malaysian ambassador to Japan Shahril Effendi Abd Ghany said the agreements would reflect both countries’ commitment to elevate bilateral ties, following the upgrading of Malaysia-Japan relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership.
“The visit will witness the signing of four memorandums of cooperation and two letters of intent in the areas of defence and regional security, healthcare, energy transition, environmental cooperation, and higher education cooperation between Malaysia and Japan,” he said at a press conference at the Malaysian embassy here.
During the three-day visit, Anwar is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Japanese prime minister Sanae Takaichi and attend a joint press conference, where the cooperation documents are expected to be announced.
He will also deliver a keynote address at the 31st Nikkei Forum and a public lecture at the University of Tokyo.
The ambassador said the visit would give Malaysia a strategic opportunity to expand cooperation with Japan in economy, science and technology, and capacity-building.
He also said Japan remained one of Malaysia’s most important long-term partners, adding that Malaysia should not take “old friends” for granted.
“Japan has been with Malaysia for 70 years, and we must continue to work together. Although China is now (Malaysia’s) biggest trading partner, Japan is no less important,” he said.
