The Port of Osaka handled 180,600 TEUs of international container traffic in April. This represented a 0.5% year-on-year decline and marked the port’s first contraction in five months.
Export volumes fell during the month. The port handled 83,371 TEUs of exports, down 2.9%. Imports performed better, rising 1.7% to 97,229 TEUs.
Loaded container volumes remained stable overall. Osaka processed 126,778 loaded TEUs, up 0.1% year-on-year. Loaded exports increased 8.8% to 37,166 TEUs. Loaded imports declined 3.1% to 89,612 TEUs.
Empty container traffic weakened. The port handled 53,822 empty TEUs in April, down 2%.
Despite the April decline, volumes stayed positive during the first four months of the year. Osaka processed 696,378 TEUs between January and April, increasing 3.7% year-on-year.
Exports reached 316,778 TEUs during the period, growing 3.9%. Imports rose 3.6% to 379,600 TEUs.
Loaded container volumes totaled 491,624 TEUs during the first four months. This represented growth of 2.1%. Loaded exports climbed 9.7% to 136,263 TEUs, while loaded imports slipped 0.6% to 355,361 TEUs.
Empty container volumes continued growing over the longer period. Osaka handled 204,754 empty TEUs from January to April, up 7.8%.
The latest figures show softer activity in April but continued resilience in overall trade flows.
