TAIPEI (Taiwan News) – A group of almost 200 Japanese travelers visited Penghu in a move to promote the island county to an international clientele, reports said Saturday.
The group spent three days and two nights in Penghu to visit local cultural highlights and attend the fireworks festival, per CNA. Last year, 1.48 million Japanese traveled to Taiwan, with Penghu trying to attract a larger share by boosting its presence at travel fairs and contacts with tour operators.
The June 3-5 tour was organized by the Tourism Administration, the Penghu National Scenic Area Headquarters, and Hankyu Travel of Japan. The group set out from the port of Budai in Chiayi County by ferry to Magong in Penghu.
The foundation for the trip was laid by the Tourism Administration’s invite to Hankyu Travel last July. Tour agency staff visited Penghu and met with local tourism officials before they decided to arrange this week’s trip.
The Penghu tourism sector hoped the tour would lead to boost the popularity of the islands in the Japanese market, the CNA report said.
