I Climbed a 400-Year-Old Japanese Castle and This Was My Reward

You hop on the Shinkansen between Tokyo and Kyoto.
You fly right past Hamamatsu without a second thought.

That’s a mistake. 🏯

Hamamatsu Castle sits quietly in the heart of the city —
a 400-year-old fortress where Japan’s greatest shogun,
Tokugawa Ieyasu, once looked out over the land he would
go on to unite.

We climbed every one of those stairs.
And the view at the top?

Absolutely worth it.

From the tower you can see the entire city spread out
beneath you — rooftops, mountains in the distance,
and yes, the Yamaha building (because this is Hamamatsu 😄).
On a clear day you can even see toward Lake Hamana.

No massive queues. No tourist circus.
Just history, fresh air, and one of the best views
in all of Shizuoka Prefecture.

🎟️ Entry: ¥200 adults (one of Japan’s best value castles)

🏔️ Best view direction: west toward Lake Hamana & the Alps
