Global law firm White & Case has hired Noah Carr (L) and Gordon Palmquist as partners in Tokyo, recruiting the pair from Freshfields to bolster its mergers and acquisitions practice in Japan.

The two lawyers, who both joined Freshfields as partners at the same time in late 2023, bring more than 15 years of Tokyo experience each to their new firm.

Carr focuses on complex public and private acquisitions, carve-outs, growth equity, joint ventures and alliances for Japanese and international strategic and financial investors. Before Freshfields, he spent more than four years as a partner at Latham & Watkins and nearly a decade at Morrison & Foerster, where he progressed from associate to partner.

Palmquist advises Japanese corporate groups, financial institutions and energy and trading companies on outbound acquisitions, divestments, carve-outs and infrastructure transactions. Ashurst-shearman/75698″>He previously served as a partner at Mayer Brown in Tokyo for more than five years, and earlier in his career worked at the legacy Shearman & Sterling and Mayer Brown.

White & Case Chair Heather McDevitt said in a statement that the hires would strengthen the firm’s cross-border M&A offering in Japan. “Their stellar reputation for providing strategic guidance to cross-border investors will add strength on strength to our team in Tokyo,” she said.

Added Jun Usami, White & Case’s office executive partner in Tokyo: “Their arrival adds important depth to our cross-border capability in Japan and reflects our continued investment in building a fully integrated M&A and private capital platform across key markets.”

White & Case now has 13 full-time partners in Tokyo. They include M&A and real estate partner Ed Sheremeta, who joined earlier this year. The office also recently lost M&A partner Clara Shirota to Kirkland & Ellis.
