Japanese importers are showing interest in smaller Thai durians weighing up to 1.5 kilograms, according to Wittayakorn Maneenetr, director-general of Thailand’s Department of Internal Trade (DIT).
“These durians are suitable for small households and meet the demand of Japanese consumers,” he said.
During Thaifex-Anuga Asia 2026, Japanese buyers held discussions with the DIT to identify packaging providers and exporters capable of supplying peeled durian in small consumer packs for the Japanese market.
The event also generated orders for premium agricultural products. According to the DIT, a premium fruit and rice pavilion secured orders worth about 335 million baht (US$10.1 million) during the exhibition.
Sales included 1,921 tons of fresh and processed fruit valued at 222 million baht (US$6.7 million).
The DIT expects additional orders to follow after the event.
According to Wittayakorn, the exhibition supports agricultural output that is forecast to increase in 2026, particularly fruit production, which could rise by more than 30 per cent.
He said the event helped create market opportunities and supported price stability for Thai fruit.
The DIT also reported that promotional activities carried out with Japanese content creator NipponBoyz increased awareness of Thai fruit and helped expand the consumer base for Thai fruit products in Japan.
