Frank Ocean hasn’t released any new music since he shared a pair of singles back in 2020 — but he’s not completely in hiding.

A fan recently spotted the singer walking around a shopping district in Tokyo, Japan. “Yesterday while shopping in Tokyo I got a rare spotting of [a] legend just walking around keeping it smooth,” the fan wrote. “It’s been a min since Frank Ocean put out music… He knew that I could tell it was him as soon as he started walking lol.”

In the clip, Ocean sported a low-key outfit accentuated by wrist jewelry and an understated cap. He shared a nod and smile as he walked past the fan and was promptly on his way.

While it’s been quiet on the music front for Frank Ocean, the Odd Future alum has been keeping busy with his directorial debut. Last year, it was announced that Ocean was filming his first movie in Mexico City, with Alien: Romulus actor David Johnson starring in the lead role. Further details about the project, including release date and a plot synopsis, have been kept under wraps.

When Johnson was asked about working with Ocean at the Bafta Awards last year, he shared some kind words about his director: “He’s a very special person, and we’re working on a really special thing.”

Fans have been patiently waiting for any updates from Ocean for years, but he’s clearly been on some side-quests recently with his jewelry project, Homer, and his foray into filmmaking.

Ocean performed at Coachella in 2023, although he canceled his appearance at the festival’s second weekend due to a leg injury. His landmark second album Blonde, widely considered one of music’s greatest albums, will celebrate its 10th anniversary this August.
