United Airlines has issued a travel alert for three major airports in Japan due to Typhoon Jangmi. In a statement to TheTravel, United confirmed that it cancelled multiple flights to Japan and that passengers were offered flexible rebooking options, as the carrier will waive change fees.
United Airlines has been busy on its travel alerts page in recent days. The carrier also issued a strike warning for four major airports in Portugal, scheduled for June 3, which is expected to impact hundreds of flights nationwide.
Along with its travel alerts for international destinations, United has also warned travelers of runway construction at San Francisco International Airport, which may impact flights during the summer.
“Planned runway construction at San Francisco International Airport may cause flight delays, and we encourage customers to check their flight status in the United app. Additionally, we are reviewing the FAA’s updated guidance to determine if we will need to make any changes to our flight schedule in the future,” United tells TheTravel.
Passengers are now facing other disruptions. Hundreds of flights have been cancelled due to the impact of Typhoon Jangmi.
Typhoon Jangmi Has Caused Hundreds Of Flight Cancellations Throughout Japan
Typhoon Jangmi has brought heavy rain and strong winds across parts of Japan, resulting in poor visibility nationwide. Due to the storm, hundreds of flights have been impacted since June 2. Disruptions are expected to continue until June 4.
According to FlightAware, Tokyo Haneda Airport had the most cancelled flights worldwide, with 381 departing flights alone, more than half of the airport’s total volume at 54% of flights.
In addition, there were 378 arrival delays, affecting 55% of flights.
Several major airlines were impacted by the storm. None were hit harder than Japan Airlines and All Nippon. Japan Airlines cancelled 322 flights, while All Nippon cancelled 233 flights.

What United Airlines Is Saying About Cancelled Japan Flights In The Upcoming Days

In a statement to TheTravel, United Airlines confirmed that it is monitoring Typhoon Jangmi. The carrier is encouraging customers to stay up to date with the United app or the airline’s website to check their flight status.
United Airlines tells TheTravel, “We are closely monitoring Typhoon Jangmi and have adjusted our schedules as needed. We have implemented a travel waiver to offer customers the flexibility to manage their travel plans. Customers should use the United app or visit united.com to check their flight status and view the latest information.”
United Airlines’ flexible rebooking option will cover several flights between June 2 and June 4 to three major airports: Osaka (KIX), Tokyo-Haneda (HND) and Tokyo-Narita (NRT).
United’s cancelled flights to Japan:
June 2: UA143 (NRT-ROR), UA837 (NRT-KHH), UA32 (NRT-CEB)
June 3: UA838 (KHH-NRT), UA33 (CEB-NRT)
June 4: UA142 (ROR-NRT)
In order to be eligible for United’s flexible rebooking offer, the flight to Japan must have been booked by May 30, 2026.
United Airlines’ Flexible Rebooking For Typhoon Jangmi
For United Airlines to waive the change fees, the departing flight must be between May 31, 2026, and June 8, 2026. On its travel alerts page, United Airlines states that the same cabin must be booked and for the same cities as the original ticket.
“If your flight is affected, here are your options: You can reschedule your trip and we’ll waive change fees and fare differences. But, your new flight must be a United flight departing between May 31, 2026 and June 8, 2026. Tickets must be in the same cabin and between the same cities as originally booked.”
United’s flight disruption numbers were slightly higher on Tuesday, with an increase in delays.
United Airlines’ Current Delays And Cancellation Totals

There were 4,573 delays within, into, or out of the United States yesterday. Among the U.S. airlines, American Airlines had the most delays and cancellations due to yet another ground stop at Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. As for United Airlines, it faced delay issues of its own at Bush Airport.
United Airlines had 583 total delays and 18 cancellations on Wednesday.
Delays were moderate for United Airlines’ other competitors. Southwest Airlines had 768 delays but kept cancellations low, at just 5. Delta Air Lines had low delays, just 383, affecting 11% of its total flight volume. Delta’s cancellations were also lower than usual at just 12.
United Airlines will once again be impacted by Typhoon Jangmi on June 3 and June 4. Despite the cancellations, affected passengers will be able to use United’s flexible rebooking offer as the airline is waiving the change fees.
