Incredible Japanese food at the Sapporo Lilac Festival

After three weeks in Japan, I’m increasingly confident that this country grows and cooks the best food on the planet. As a beautiful example, this Sapporo Lilac Festival seemed to be far less about lilacs than it was about the astoundingly delicious food and wine produced in the Hokkaido region. At an event like this, the extremely high level of pride these people have in their food is as obvious as it is well-justified.

Because all the way from the cheesy potato stick we ordered on a whim, to the roasted shiitake mushroom with bechamel (possibly my favorite bite on this Japan trip so far), to the televised tempura asparagus and onions, to the brown sugar syrup kinako dongo dumplings on a stick, to the trio of local wines, to the haskap berry cake, literally every single thing we swallowed at this festival was exceptional, including the always-awesome Japanese vibes. I love it here so much.

  1. That cute little cake near the end is made with haskap, a type of honeysuckle that looks (and kinda tastes) like a cross between a honeysuckle and a blueberry❤️👌
