Highlights
The display connects everyday objects and refined artworks to illustrate the relationship between utility and aesthetic expression in Japanese culture. Highlights include:
polychrome woodblock prints and ukiyo-e;
lacquer objects, decorated bowls and boxes;
kimono stencils and small traditional toys;
books, loose prints and manuals that helped introduce Japanese printmaking to the West.
The exhibition aims to show how simple forms and attention to detail can evoke a profound emotional response—mirroring the impact Japanese art had on European artists and designers.
Organization and curators
Organized by the Municipality of Crema in collaboration with the Museo d’Arte Orientale – Collezione Mazzocchi and the cultural association Mnemosyne, and sponsored by the Italy–Japan Foundation, the show is curated by a team of art historians and conservators. Works come from public institutions and private lenders.
