Japan’s Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have met in Tokyo, one day before the start of President Donald Trump’s visit to China.
The meeting on Tuesday took place at the Prime Minister’s Office for about 20 minutes. Finance Minister Katayama Satsuki also attended.
Takaichi and Bessent discussed a wide range of issues, including Trump’s visit to China, Japan-US relations, critical minerals and Japanese investment in the United States based on a bilateral agreement.
Takaichi touched on efforts needed to strengthen the supply chain between Japan and the US, as well as minimizing the risks of a high-performance AI model.
The two also discussed the situation in the Indo-Pacific region, and Bessent explained the recent situation of US-China relations.
He later told reporters that the meeting covered Trump’s visit and the importance of the US-Japan relationship.
Bessent stressed that the partnership is strong, and that the prime minister had a very successful visit with Trump this year that the two countries are “building on.”
Asked if he received any requests from Takaichi regarding Trump’s visit to China, Bessent said no.
