The Secretariat of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) has announced that Mexico has begun exporting bell peppers to Japan, with a first shipment of 733 kilograms from Sinaloa confirmed following an agreement signed with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) at the end of 2025.

“This shipment comes after 16 years of negotiations and technical discussions with specialists from Japan, following the National Service for Agri-Food Health, Safety and Quality (Senasica) demonstrating, through scientific research, that bell peppers are not susceptible to tobacco blue mold, which had been the main concern of the Japanese health authority.”

To date, 20 farms and 11 packing houses in Coahuila, Guanajuato, Querétaro, and Sinaloa have been registered to participate in the export protocol, with additional interested growers able to join gradually.

Mexican growers currently ship this fruit to markets including the United States and Canada.

“Mexico already exports pork and beef, asparagus, grapes, berries, avocado, tomato, mango, orange juice, and vegetables (broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower) to Japan, which reflects the trust and recognition that the Asian country has toward Mexico.”
