A section of a road about 3 meters wide has collapsed in Osaka Prefecture, western Japan. No one has been injured.

The incident occurred near an intersection on the Senrioka-Mishima route in Settsu City on Sunday. Police received a call shortly after 3 p.m. regarding a depression in the road.

City officials say initially there was a sunken section about 3 meters wide and workers were trying to fill it. But they say the depression expanded to a sinkhole roughly 3 meters deep at around 6:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Officials say the cause of the sinkhole was damage to a part connecting underground sewage piping and a manhole.

The site is about 200 meters east of Settsu-shi Station on the Hankyu Railway line and usually sees a lot of traffic.

City officials plan to close a 700-meter section of road surrounding the site through Wednesday to conduct repair work.
