Up the stairs beside the shoe lockers, straight down the corridor, and through a door into a sky-colored space. Beyond it lies the “Rainbow Classroom” where 7-year-old Kanata Konoe, who is hard of hearing, studies Japanese and math.
Last spring, ahead of Kanata’s enrollment at Nakadomari Elementary School in the village of Onna, Okinawa Prefecture, staff from the prefectural Okinawa School for the Deaf and the village board of education met repeatedly to discuss how to accommodate him, including where to set up a special classroom.
They chose an unused room on the sunlit second floor, a space where Kanata could focus. Double doors would keep out extraneous noise.
